LHA gained planning permission for change of use to residential and the ambition was to retain the feel and character of the existing whilst updating the fabric. The artist’s studio was and is occupied throughout the works.
A strong palette of materials; stone, brick and timber frame, so the character of the workshop was to be retained where possible, exposed stone walls and floors, raw timber framing on the upper floors. The primary volumes are to being retained including the 1st floor glass gabled studio. Building techniques include breathable insulating materials in the roof and timber wall structure and limecrete floors adjoining the stone walls thus allowing the industrial detailing to be carried through.
